Braybrook College Power Collective

Braybrook College hired a MEA, with a focus of the role being connection and belonging for students of refugee backgrounds. The MEA started the ‘The Power Collective’ in 2019, a space for students of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to come together around issues they are passionate about. The collective has become a platform for students to voice their opinions, determine communication strategies with staff at the school, and welcome other students who wish to be allies in these pursuits.

The collective builds student agency through a focus on developing self-confidence, learning to cope with changing situations, becoming informed decision-makers and critical thinkers, and developing practices that celebrate diversity and treat all people respectfully and with sensitivity. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the collective focused on mental health as well as raising awareness and funds for people in crises overseas and remained an important channel of connection for students.
